NHS Eaglettes Hosting Summer Dance Camp
The Niceville High School Eaglettes’ Dance Team will be hosting a two-day summer dance camp for girls ages 4-12 on June 13-14 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. A dance showcase will be held on June 14 at 6 p.m. featuring all the dance campers. The princess-themed camp will include dance instruction, arts and crafts, lunch, movies and story time. The registration fee is $50 for the first child and $40 for each additional child per family. Registration forms may be picked up at the NHS Attendance Office or local elementary schools. They are due by May 24.

NHS Students Chosen to Study Abroad
Five students from Niceville High School have been awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth Scholarship sponsored by the State Department. The scholarship allows students to live abroad during the summer with host families and study “hard to learn” languages. Erin England and Brayton Miles will be studying in China; Lydia Moellenkamp will be studying in Russia; Cassidy McAllister will be studying in Morocco; and Regan McAllister will be studying in Turkey.

NATIONAL LATIN EXAM RESULTS 2013
The American Classical League recognized the following Niceville students for their Outstanding Performance on the National Latin Exam given in March. Seventy-seven Latin students tested; the American Classical League recognized 42. More than 154,000 students worldwide took this test. These students received awards based on their performance in relation to all students. The Exam covered Grammar, Vocabulary, Classical History, Geography, Mythology, Literature, and Sight Translations.

Rebecca Havard Awarded Four-Year Scholarship
The Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation along with the Take Stock in Children Scholarship Program recently awarded Rebecca Havard with a four-year college scholarship. Each student who is selected by the Executive Committee of the Foundation signs a contract, along with his or her parent, promising to maintain a good school record, to remain drug and crime free and to meet weekly with a mentor. Students who maintain the terms of their contracts are awarded tuition scholarships to the post-secondary institutions of their choice. Rebecca is a freshmen at Niceville High School. Congratulations, Rebecca!

NHS Junior to Sit for National Chemistry Exam
Milbrey Parke, a junior at Niceville High School, has qualified to sit for the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam. The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad and the International Chemistry Olympiad are multi-tiered competitions that bring together the world’s most talented high school students to test their knowledge and skills in chemistry. Nations around the world conduct examinations to — nominate the most high-performing students for the International Chemistry Olympiad. Milbrey is currently enrolled in four Advanced Placement courses at Niceville High School, one of which is AP Chemistry. Ms. Regina Gaskin is her teacher.

Georgia Pearce was recently awarded a $2500 National Merit Scholarship and Sabrina Valenti was awarded a National Merit, Dr. Joseph J. Jacobs Scholarship. Georgia will be attending Florida State University and Sabrina will be attending Louisiana State University in the fall.

Melody Zargari was recently crowned Miss Niceville High School for 2013. The Runner Ups were 1st —Madison Booth, 2nd —Ashley Meyer, and 3rd —Kalyn Worsham. Six Niceville High School seniors participated in the annual Van Porter Student Art Exhibition sponsored by the Okaloosa County School District. All Okaloosa County High School seniors are invited to participate and share their creations with the public. Senior Robin Berntsen was awarded the Arts and Design Society Award for her Charcoal piece entitled Alter Ego andseniors Colby Detwiler, Kelsey Joyner and Anna Price were awarded Honorable Mentions.

Kyle Saleeby Recognized for Volunteer Service
Kyle Saleeby, a senior at Niceville High School, has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.
The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Kyle participated in the Spirit of Community program this year as a representative of Niceville High School.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes young people across America for outstanding community service activities. The program began in 1995.
Kyle, who will graduate Summa Cum Laude this spring, received a congratulatory letter from President Barack Obama. He is a member of the NaGisa team, Eagle Pride Marching Band and also enrolled in the Advanced Placement and AICE programs at Niceville High School.
Kyle was joined by his AP Calculus classmates as Principal Nobles presented the award.

Leadership Students Represent NHS at State Convention
Niceville High School’s Leadership Team recently received the highest award at the Florida Association of Student Council State Convention in Palm Beach. The Gold Medallion award is based on the accumulation of projects the school has performed over the past year. They also placed 3rd in the State Project category for the Quest for Technology car raffle which raised money for an iPad lab. Congratulations to the students of Leadership, Student Government Association, Interclub Council as well as all the clubs and organizations at Niceville High School. Ms. Megan Mueller and Ms. Krissinda Chambers are the sponsors.

National Merit Finalists Announced for Niceville High School
National Merit Scholarship Finalists Katherine Ammon, Georgia Pearce and Sabrina Valenti are now eligible for the National Merit Scholarship awards which will be offered in the spring of 2013. They will also compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. Winners are selected without consideration of family financial circumstances, college choice, or major and career plans. Congratulations to all three finalists!
Katherine Ammon, a senior at Niceville High School, is a
member of the National Honor Society, the Junior Classical League, and the International Thespian
Society. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction, and has achieved both Summa Cum Laude and
Magna Cum Laude recognition on the National Latin Exam. Katherine received a 2012 Achievement
Award for Superior Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English. She was also
selected to study pharmacology at Vanderbilt University this past summer. Katherine has
volunteered with Edge Elementary School’s music department, and has successfully competed
in district and state theatrical competitions. She is currently enrolled in three Advanced
Placement and two AICE courses at Niceville High School.
Georgia Pearce, a senior at Niceville High School, is a
member of National Honor Society, Junior Classical League, Academic Team, Key Club and Psychology
Club. She was also a member of the winning team of the Cox Cable Communications Academic
Tournament in 2012 and qualified for the All-County Academic Team in December. Georgia has played
the piano since third grade, winning several awards, and is a company dancer at the Ballet
Conservatory. She was selected as the regional representative for the U.S. Naval Academy STEM
program. Georgia has achieved both Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude recognition in the National
Latin Exam, and she is an AP Scholar with Distinction. She is currently enrolled in five
Advanced Placement courses and one AICE course at Niceville High School.

Sabrina Valenti, a senior at Niceville High School, is a member of the Eagle Pride Marching Band and served as flute section leader her junior and senior years. She has performed with the Wind Ensemble since her freshman year, and she is currently enrolled in six Advanced Placement courses. Sabrina is the captain of the Niceville High School Academic Team and is a three-year member of Team Okaloosa, a selective academic team that competes annually at the state level. In addition to holding a part-time job, she tutors her peers in both academic and musical endeavors. Sabrina has been designated a Chancellor's Alumni Scholar at Louisiana State University, where she hopes to major in both political science and international studies.

Sophia Bergmann Receives Award for Aspirations in Computing
Sophia Bergmann, a sophomore at Niceville High School, was recently recognized by the National Center for Women & Information Technology Alabama/Northwest Florida Affiliate Awards Committee. She was selected as a 2013 National Runner-Up for the Award for Aspirations in Computing.
The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. Awardees are selected for their computing and IT aptitude, leadership ability, academic history, and plans for post-secondary education. The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing offers both a national and local "affiliate" competitions to generate support and visibility for women's participation in communities nationwide.
Sophia holds several certifications including CompTIA A+, Microsoft Certified Professional and is preparing for the Cisco CCNA. She is also an active member of the Junior Classical League with multiple first place wins at the regional and state level in Greek and Latin categories and she earned a Gold summa cum laude on the National Latin Exam. She is captain of the JV Academic team and participates at both the junior and varsity levels.

NHS Students to Attend International Science and Engineering Fair in Arizona
Senior Kyle Saleeby and sophomore Michael Sementilli will represent Niceville High School and the entire panhandle at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona. Sophomore Brayton Miles was selected as an alternate. Ms. Gina Emery and Ms. Megan Mueller are their science teachers.
The premier global science competition for students in grades 9–12 provides an annual forum for more than 1,500 high school students from 70 countries, regions, and territories to display their independent research. It will be held May 12-17, 2013, at the Phoenix Convention Center.
Today, millions of students worldwide compete each year in local and school-sponsored science fairs; the winners of these events go on to participate in Intel ISEF-affiliated regional and state fairs from which the best win the opportunity to attend Intel ISEF. Intel ISEF unites these top young scientific minds, showcasing their talent on an international stage, enabling them to submit their work to judging by doctoral level scientists—a
d providing the opportunity to compete for more than $3 million in prizes and scholarships.
Other East Panhandle Regional Science Fair winners are freshmen Claire Ponder and Tyler Russell. They will represent Niceville High School in Lakeland, FL at the state level.

Registration Information for Current 9th through 11th Grades
Tuesday, February 19: We will be hosting an informational registration meeting for all current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students and their parents on, in the Niceville High School auditorium. The academic curriculum for the 2013 - 2014 school years will be presented along with information concerning selection of courses, graduation requirements, Florida Bright Futures Scholarships and criteria for honor graduates. Current freshmen and sophomores will meet from 5:30 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. and current juniors will meet from 6:30 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. The 2013-2014 Curriculum Guides for 10th-12th Grade are available at www.nicevillehighschool.org.
Tuesday, February 19: Students will receive their registration forms during an extended SOAR. SOAR teachers will have each student's academic history to assist with their course selection. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, students must take their registration forms to their teachers for required signatures.
Friday, February 22: There will be an extended SOAR at which time student registration forms must be returned to the SOAR teacher and checked for completeness.
February 25 - March 8: Counselors will be entering student requests. Once counselors have entered all requests in the computer, students will receive a white 3 X 5 card reflecting their course requests. Cards will be distributed during SOAR. Students can make any changes to their requests on this card. Cards will be returned to SOAR advisors with any requested changes.
Monday, March 11: Students or parents may make appointments with counselors to answer any questions about curriculum or academic plans. Please call the Guidance Office at (850) 833-4114, ext. 1312 beginning March 11, 2013, to schedule an appointment. Current freshmen will schedule any conferences with the appropriate counselor below:

Niceville High School Standout Named
Gatorade Florida Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year
CHICAGO — In its 28th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Thomas Howell of Niceville High School as its 2012-13 Gatorade Florida Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. Howell is the first Gatorade Florida Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year to be chosen from Niceville High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse, distinguishes Howell as Florida’s best high school boys cross country runner. He is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year award to be announced in January.
The 5-foot-10 junior raced to the Class 3A individual state championship this past season with a time of 15:19.6. Howell also won the District 1 Championships, the Region 1 Championships, the Gulf Coast Stampede and the Pace Patriot Invitational.
Howell, a junior at Niceville High School, has maintained a 3.94 GPA in the classroom. A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he has volunteered locally on behalf of church service-mission retreats.
“Thomas is not only our most accomplished runner, but he is also our hardest working and most team-spirited,” said Niceville coach Tom Durrenberger. “After completing his workouts, he always turns back around and encourages his teammates to work harder.”
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.

All Sophomores to Take FCAT Writes
The FCAT Writes test will be given to all sophomores on Tuesday, February 26, during an extended 2nd period. Please make every effort to ensure your sophomore is in attendance and prepared for the FCAT Writes test. Also, remind your student to leave phones and any other electronic devices at home or in lockers. They must not be brought into the testing room.
Here is the bell schedule for periods 1-4 on testing day:
1st period: 7:00 – 7:25
2nd period: 7:30 – 9:15 FCAT Writes Testing
(Subject to change as testing conditions must be flexible. The times for 3rd and 4th periods may also be adjusted as necessary.)
3rd period: 9:20 – 9:50
4th period: 9:55 – 10:35
5th through 7th regular schedule

ACT-SO Applications Available
Applications for ACT-SO Outreach and Scholarship Program may be picked up in room 611 or room 314. The deadline is March 31, 2013. ACT-SO is the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technology, and Science Olympics. All students are encouraged to participate.

Three NHS students were recently chosen for the prestigious Player of the Year
Three NHS students were recently chosen for the prestigious Player of the Year Award by the All Sports Association and Northwest Florida Daily News. Kayla Bloor, Golf Player of the Year; Kayla Carr, Volleyball Player of the Year; and Thomas Howell, Runner Player of the Year were presented with plaques and will also be honored at the 44th Annual All Sports Award dinner on February 8 at the Emerald Coast Conference Center. We congratulate these athletes for their outstanding performance and contribution to our school and community.

Eaglette Dance Team Competes Across South
On January 26, 2013, the Niceville High School Eaglette dance team competed in the Out-of-State Division at the Alabama Dance Championship. The Eaglettes placed 1st in Varsity Jazz, 2nd in Varsity Hip Hop, and received the outstanding choreography award for the entire jazz category. The team is coached by Brooke James and Jill Kerschitz. Jazz choreography is done by Jill Kerschitz and Hip Hop choreography is done by Denise Dicharry Galjour. The Eaglettes will be competing at the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, Florida, on February 2 and 3.

Leslie Richardson Named National Achievement Finalist
Leslie Richardson has been named a Finalist in the Competition for National Achievement Scholarships. She will continue in the selection process for some 800 Achievement Scholarships in late February. Leslie is currently enrolled in Advanced Placement and AICE courses at Niceville High School. She is also an outstanding member of Opus I, All-State Reading Chorus, Niceville Singers and Select Women’s Chorus. She was presented with a certificate by NHS Principal Rodney Nobles.

Victoria Marks Wins 1st Place in Essay Contest
Victoria Marks, a senior at Niceville High School, recently won First Place in the Okaloosa County Christopher Columbus Essay Contest, sponsored by the Choctawhatchee Bay Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. Victoria’s original essay will be forwarded to the state contest. Victoria is currently enrolled in five Advanced Placement classes at NHS. We wish her the best at the state competition!
